Controlling Nitrogen Removal Processes in Improved Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland with Hydroponic Materials: Effect of Influent COD/N Ratios

چکیده
Discharge of nitrogen (N) with wastewater causes eutrophication in surface water. On the other hand, nutrient-rich can be valuable for agriculture. Tailoring N removal or conservation is important to meet requirements different water end uses. Improved vertical flow constructed wetlands hydroponic materials (CWH) as substrata were developed at lab scale a greenhouse and studied optimize CWH. This study investigated effect influent COD/N ratios 5/1 15/1 on CWHs Syngonium vegetation three substrata, pumice, cocopeat, mineral wool. CWH pumice showed highest TN both ratios. The plant significantly contributed additional 50% Nitrification above 90% was observed ratios, indicating sufficient oxygenation due pulse operated denitrification process enhanced higher ratio compared by around 10–40%. occurring nitrification indicate coexistence aerobic anaerobic conditions CWH, balancing these necessary future applications remove its specific use, i.e., irrigation (high standards) discharge (low standards).

Nitrogen removal and ammonia-oxidising bacteria in a vertical flow constructed wetland treating inorganic wastewater.
Nitrogen removal performance and the ammonia-oxidising bacterial (AOB) community were assessed in the batch loaded 1.3 ha saturated surface vertical flow wetland at CSBP Ltd, a fertiliser and chemical manufacturer located in Kwinana, Western Australia. From September 2008 to October 2009 water quality was monitored and sediment samples collected for bacterial analyses. During the period of stud...
متن کاملWastewater Treatment with Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland
Water is one of the most important elements involved in the creation and development of healthy life. Haphazard disposal of untreated wastewater from households as well as institutions and industry is causing severe deterioration of water bodies in many urban areas in the developing world. There are several methods to treat the municipal wastewater for intended use. One of the methods of the tr...
متن کاملNitrogen removal in constructed wetland systems
Since the mid 1990s, constructed wetlands have been increasingly used as a lowenergy ‘green’ technique, in the treatment of wastewater and stormwater, driven by the rising cost of fossil fuels and increasing concern about climate change. Among various applications of these wetlands, a significant area is the removal of nitrogenous pollutants to protect the water environment and to enable effect...
متن کاملSimulating phosphorus removal from a vertical-flow constructed wetland grown with C. alternifolius species
Vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) is a promising technique for removal of excess nutrients and certain pollutants from wastewaters. The aim of this study was to develop a STELLA (structural thinking, experiential learning laboratory with animation) model for estimating phosphorus (P) removal in an artificial VFCW (i.e., a substrate column with six zones) grown with umbrella papyrus (Cype...
متن کاملEvaluation of Organic Matter Removal Efficiency and Microbial Enzyme Activity in Vertical-Flow Constructed Wetland Systems
In this study, enzyme activities and their relationships to organics purification were investigated in three different vertical flow constructed wetlands, namely system A (planting Pennisetum sinese Roxb), system B (planting Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), and system C (no plant). These three wetland systems were fed with simulation domestic sewage at an influent flow rate of 20 cm/day. The resul...
